We started opening up the crate and organizing on Jan 25, 2019.
All the work is done by us both working together but I’m counting time directly, not as person-hours.
The entire tail took roughly 40 hours to build, with no assembly. We decided to prep, prime and paint the parts before doing any assembly. Of course we may still change our minds on that!
Tail Parts: Total 40 hours (roughly 80 person-hours)
Rudder 5 hours Sunday 1/26/2019
Vertical Stabilizer 7 hours 2/10/2019, 2/11/2019, 2/17/2019
(+rework to fix accidentally-used countersunk rivets, 2/22 1hr)
Horizontal Stabilizer 10 hours 2/23/2019, 2/24/2019, 3/2/2019, 3/3/2019
Elevator & Trim tab 17 hours 3/3/2019, 3/10/2019, 3/15/2019, 3/16/2019,
3/30/2019, 3/31/2019
I’d guesstimate maybe 1/3 of this time was thinking and looking and reading and rereading. Probably 2/3 was actual work, with most of that being 2 people working. So 80 person-hours but probably 50 if we were to build a second one.
The factory times we saw published were 24 hours for the tail. So we were 2-3x that. For a first time build by two neophyte builders, with lots of interruptions and regrouping, not too bad.
The next phase started on Saturday, March 7 2020 with unpacking and organizing plus pulling out parts for the left wing. Coronavirus pandemic concerns slowed progress a bit but we carried on… The rest of the time log isn’t as detailed in terms of what specific items we did, but here’s the info:
Landing light work and spar work 10 hrs total 3/15/2020 and 3/22/2020
Ribs and bellcrank /flap work 10 hrs 3/28-29
plus 6 hrs fixing missed items 4/11/2020
Top wing skin 6 hrs 4/18/2020
Bottom wing skin 13 hrs 4/26/2020 and 5/2/2020
Fuel tank 7 hrs 5/3/2020
Final tally on left wing 52+ hrs
Next dates: 5/9-5/10 10hrs
5/18 8hrs, 5/19 8 hrs, 5/20 8 hrs, 5/22 2hrs,
5/23 2 hrs, 5/24 4hrs, 5/25 4hrs — right wing done!
5/31 8hrs (flaps)
6/5-6/6 9 hrs (complete flaps and ailerons)
6/12 2hrs (start struts and reorganize hangar for fuselage work)
Note that the right wing took roughly half the time of the left,
